BIOTITE
Named
after Jean Baptiste Biot, 1774 – 1862, a French Chemist and physicist
who first drew attention to the optical differences in micas.
Biotite
is an iron – magnesium – bearing member of the mica group of minerals.
It is characteristically black, dark brown to red – brown, and the
crystals form very thin paper like layers that (as it typical of micas)
are stacked one on top of each other. Where the crystals are large,
their hexagonal shape may be visible.
OCCURRENCE
Biotite
is a common rock – forming mineral which is found in many parts of the
world wherever there are metamorphic and igneous rocks. It is
particularly common in carbonatites. It occurs in granite, gnesiss and
schist, and large crystals, several centimeters on edge, occur in coarse
– grained pegmatites. Biotite is not usually found in sedimentary rocks.
