Named from the Greek 'pyropos' meaning 'fire- like', a reference to this garnet's characteristic red colour.

Pyrope forms attractive pink, pink - red orange - red to purple - red dodecahedral crystals. Rhodolite is a red - violet variety of pyrope that is used as a gemstone.

Occurrence

Pyrope occurs in ultramafic rocks, kimberlites and alluvium therefrom.
