Topaz - November Birthstone

At first sight it has a resemblance to aquamarine, but  aquamarine always displays a strong pleochroism from blue to greenish blue, whereas Topaz is a more definite blue or blue with a grayish tone.Topaz occurs in colourless, blue, green, pink, orange or brown though Topaz is well known to be yellow, and in ancient times all yellow stones were called topaz.The classical precious topaz is yellow or yellow to orange-brown in colour. Sherry or Madeira would best describe the most desirable colour.Topaz of the best known gemstones.The name is believed to have derived from the Greek work topazos, the ancient name for St. John's Island in the Red Sea, or from the Sanskrit tapas meaning fire.
